Crossness Pumping Station

My Father’s Day treat, a visit to Crossness Sewage Pumping station, described as a Victorian Cathedral of Ironwork which was opened in April 1865 and operated until alternate equipment was installed in 1913. When running at maximum capacity, each of the four steam powered pumping engines, running at 11 revolutions per minute, could lift 6 tonnes of sewage over 10 metres on each revolution.

Two of the engines have been restored and will be “in steam” on the day we visit, so watch out for the next thrilling installment from the Southern terminus of the London Sewer System.
